Aligning with libraries

Libraries and Springer serve the same communities: researchers, students, and teachers. These shared audiences mean that, to serve them well, Springer must align itself to university, library, and institutional goals and missions, and partner with librarians.

This means providing librarians with the essential tools and services they need to enhance their libraries so that they have the most valuable and relevant content and resources to empower researchers, students, teachers, and professionals to advance discovery every day. This includes working to achieve common goals, including support for librarians as the role of the library changes, and help in reducing the burden of the transition to open science, so it is more organic rather than strained.

Springer works with librarians to give access to the broadest range of content at a reasonable cost, on a seamless platform. Springer continues to invest in information infrastructure so that users can access the information they need without access issues or unneeded and frustrating friction.

And Springer gives librarians tools they need to monitor and analyse their collections, including a Librarian Portal, COUNTER 5 data, user management, and more, in order for librarians to ensure that their content acquisition is visible and getting maximum use and ROI.

One of the first institutions in Lebanon to add Springer eBooks

With the global move to electronic publishing, the Lebanese American University Libraries embraced eBooks in the early 2000s by shifting print reference works to online. This trend witnessed a huge step in 2008 with the adoption of eBooks. As Springer celebrates its 180th anniversary, I cannot but mention the impact that the acquisition of Springer eBooks has made on our collections. LAU Libraries were among the first institutions in Lebanon to add Springer eBooks (2005-2008 collections) and have not missed any of their English titles since then.

During the last decade, around 113,000 eBooks were acquired solely from Springer, with chapter downloads amounting to approximately 800,000. The diversity of the collections allowed our users across disciplines to benefit from DRM-free eBooks that they can access anywhere, everywhere, anytime, allowing the Libraries to be present outside their walls, reinforcing LAU's image as a student-centered institution. LAU Libraries are pioneers in providing state-of-the-art collections to their users: faculty, students, and staff. Whatever the future holds, LAU Libraries will continue their quest for excellence by always selecting the right materials to meet LAU users’ expectations and fulfilling their changing needs.

From a commercial relationship to a relationship between partners

The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile through its Library System has maintained a long relationship with Springer Nature via its purchase of Springer content. Our relationship has been transformed from a commercial to a relationship between partners who collaborate with each other. We have received a range of content alternatives that have allowed us to migrate from print to electronic while maintaining the quality of the content and the quality of the support. We trust and believe that Springer Nature will adapt to the new global reality of the publishing world and we are sure that we will count on them to continue evolving.
